Local Amenities & Restaurants Amenities

Shops - In Peasmarsh (about 3 miles) on the road to Rye is a good local store called Jempsons.   The store also has good fish, meat and deli counters.   The store cafe serves a wide variety of food and is a place to have a cream tea or coffee while reading the paper while your partner shops or to feed the children late afternoon. The café offers some good "all you can eat" food options ideal for feeding the kids and de-stressing meal time so you can return and relax without worrying about what to cook.

In Northiam (< 1 mile), you will find a Spar shop open to 8pm, a Jempsons local store, post office, Fish and Chip Shop, Indian Restaurant, hairdressers and more.   In addition, there is a village doctor should one be required.  In Beckley a Dentist.    There is also Wills Bakery serving hot and cold food on road to Northiam.  If you would like to order a local farm fresh Vegebox delivered to the cottage.

In Hawkhurst is a Waitrose and a Tesco along with a variety of other shops and a cinema.  In Hawkhurst on the first Saturday of each month is a market in the car park of the Royal oak.

In Tenderden, again you will find a full range of shops including Waitrose & Tesco. Tenterden is great for a relaxing stroll along the high street browsing the antique shops, then in for a coffee & pastry........ If you have children then the swimming pool is a good place for them to have fun. If old enough drop them off at the pool and go and have a browse or a coffee.  The swimming pool is close to Waitrose's car park/village center.  Also, Tenterden is the home of the Steam Railway, well worth a look even if just to visit the station and watch trains come and go.

Pubs -  Closest is the Rose and Crown at the top of the road.  The Rose and Crown is what one guest described as a rough diamond and I suppose that is what it is;  If you want an authentic country working pub where a broad spectrum of local people socialise.  Good ales and regular guest beers.  Selection of daily papers on the bar to read, relax with a drink, is wonderful.  The Landlady and her team are friendly.  The food is good pub food, try it and you will see.  No food Sunday & Monday nights.  Bonus is it is a walk to the pub so can leave car at the cottage.   Alice the landlady will cater in pub for you if you book and she is free but the pub is popular so do book.  If you walk up to the pub in winter, take a torch (but, if one of ours please bring it back as we have lost quite a few;o), as it gets very dark in winter as no streetlights.

Next is The Cock in Peasmarsh adjacent Jempsons store, followed by the Horse and Cart.  The Horse and cart serve good food.  Fish and trips worth trying.    In Rye (< 8 miles) & Tenterden (<9 miles),  you will find a full range of shops. The old high street is interesting.

Local Restaurants

Hastings has had its fair share of bad press, often the poor relations to Brighton but wow does it have some hidden treasures if you care to look. Hastings is one of those places if you look at just the surface you miss what is only known to those in the know.  Even after all these years we are still discovering things.  If you are looking for some good food why not try all eateries located in George Street, Hastings, near the old town:-

  • For literary Thai food lovers try - Boulevard Books - Hastings, It is a book shop with a difference.  After 6.30 serve good Thai food.  Very small, bit quirky but a great experience,  Seriously, try it.  They do not have a license so take your own drink but the Thai is good.  Remember though to book as the cafe does not hold many so make sure you book well in advance.

  • Siam2 - Hastings, Thai restaurant next door to Boulevard books.  Thai restaurant.  You must book though as quite small.

  • Whites - Hastings,  opposite the above restaurants.  Great for seafood lovers, but also if you just love a good burger, steak or ribs. Again booking is recommended.  The lobster is good.

  • Porters is great for music  (http://www.porterswinebar.com/ )

  • Lime Wharf cafe near Newingden bridge - go for breakfast

Other restaurants

  • The White Dog Inn - Ewehurst Green - Surprised it took us so long to try.  Since we have we have this as a regular eatery.  Food is excellent and reasonably priced for the quality. Recommended!    Not far from the cottage, but through lanes from center of Northiam so drive carefully.

  • The Ewe & Lamb Public House in Rolvenden Layne serves excellent food well worth the trip but recommend you book as can get booked up. Not too far from Cottage.  Also good for a Sunday lunch Carvery.

  • The Horse and Cart at Peasmarch, book on weekends during summer.  The last time we tried had excellent fish and chips!

  • For curry lovers in Rye is an excellent curry house, Mahdi Spice. Suggest you book as can get busy on Friday / Saturday nights.  Also very Indian restaurant near Northiam steam train, "Sahebs" Indian Restaurant.

  • For Thai, lovers try "The Lemon Grass" 01797 222327 in Rye.

  • The Bull Inn at Rolvenden is another pub serving good food - worth trying. Fish night Wednesdays.

  • In Tenterden is a good choice of restaurants, cafes, and antique shops. As for restaurants, we have not visited all but the Prezzo Restaurant was good.

  • Ozgur Restaurant - Tenterden - Turkish cuisine.  This is a good find.  Nothing better than a stroll around Tenterden then something to eat in one of the fine restaurants and Ozgur is no exception.  Well worth trying in Tenterden.

  • Although we have not tried, the Wild Mushroom Restaurant, on the A28 to Hastings near Westfield, TN35 4SB The Three Oasts on the road to Rye.
