Rye Scallop/Oyster Festival

January 8, 2019

The 17th Rye Bay Scallop Week is scheduled for Saturday 23rd February – Sunday 3rd March 2019.

This is a perfect opportunity to indulge in seafood delights!   Rye restaurants will be showcasing an array of different scallop dishes.

There will also be Scallop events including tasting events, cookery schools and demonstrations, live music and more!

Scallops have long been fished in the waters of Rye Bay with local fishermen harvesting their scallop catch from 1st November until the 30th April.  Rye scallops can only be caught by registered Rye boats (under 10 metre).

The Scallop beds are checked regularly and allowed to regenerate when necessary. There are also size restrictions on the catch, leaving the smaller scallops in the water for future years.

Checks undertaken by both DEFRA and the local fishermen ensure that stocks are healthy and sustainably maintained.

So if you like seafood and fancy a weekend away now is a good time to book.  No doubt there will be some good live music going on too.
