Local Amenities & Restaurants Amenities -
Shops - In Peasmarsh (about 3 miles on road to Rye) on the road to Rye is an excellent local store called Jempsons. Well worth a visit for your food shop or visit their cafe. The store also has good fish, meat and deli counters. The coffee shop serves a wide variety of food and is a place to have a cream tea or coffee while reading the paper while your partner shops or to feed the children late afternoon. The café offers some good "all you can eat" food options ideal for feeding the kids and de-stressing meal time so you can return and relax without worrying about what to cook.
In Northiam (< 1 mile), you will find a Spar shop open to 8pm, a Jempsons local store, post office, Fish and Chip Shop, Indian Restaurant, hairdressers and more. In addition there is a village doctors should one be required. In Beckley a Dentist. There is also Wills Bakery serving hot and cold food on road to Northiam. If you would like to order a local farm fresh Vegebox delivered to cottage take a look at www.vegebox.com
Pubs, Closest is the Rose and Crown at the top of the road. In Northiam is the Duck. In Peasemarsh the Cock
In Rye (< 8 miles) & Tenterden (<10 miles), you will find a full range of shops. The old high street is interesting. In Tenderden, again you will find a full range of shops including Waitrose & Tesco. Tenterden is great for relaxing stroll along high street browsing the antique shops, then in for a coffee & pastry........ If you have children then the swimming pool is good place for them to have fun. If old enough drop them off at pool and go and have a browse or a coffee. Swimming Pool is close to Waitrose car park / village centre.
The local Rose & Crown pub is good for sampling local country atmosphere. The pub serves simple pub food and real ale. Hours 7pm - 9pm. No food Sunday & Monday nights. Pub has a pool table and dartboard. If you walk up to the pub in winter, take a torch (but, if one of ours please bring it back as we have lost quite a few ;o), as it gets very dark in winter as no streetlights.
Hastings can get some bad press, often the poor relations to Brighton but wow does it have some hidden treasures. Hastings is one of those places if you look at just the surface you miss what is only known to those in the know. Even after all these years we are still discovering things. If you are looking for some good food why not try all located in George Street, Hastings, near the old town:-
Boulevard Books - Hastings, It is a book shop with a difference. After 6.30 serves good Thai food. Very small but great experience, Seriously, try it. They do not have a licence so take your own drink but the Thai is good. Remember though to book as the cafe does not hold many. Click on name for link to their website.
Siam2 - Hastings, Thai restaurant next door to Boulevard books. Thai restaurant. You must book though as quite small.
Whites - Hastings, opposite the above restaurants. Great for seafood lovers, but also if you just love a good burger, steak or ribs. Again booking recommended. The lobster is good.
Ozgur Restaurant - Tenterden - Turkish cuisine. This is a good find. Nothing better than a stroll around tenterden then something to eat in one of the fine restauants and Ozgur is no exception. Well worth trying in in Tenterden.
The White Dog Inn - Ewehurst Green - Surprised it has taken us so long to try. Food is excellent and reasonably priced for the quality. Recommended ! Not far from cottage, Taxi or car. Tel 01580 830264
The Ewe & Lamb Public House in Rolvenden Layne serves excellent food well worth the trip but recommend you book as can get booked up. Not too far from Cottage
Not been for a while but in past had some good meals here The White Hart at Cripps corner is another bistro pub with a contemporary feel. Again another food pub worth the trip for simple foods done well, well they were the night we tried. Need an update from any recent diners.
For curry lovers in Rye is an excellent curry house, Mahdi Spice (01797 222598). Suggest you book as can get busy on Friday / Saturday nights. Also very near Northiam steam train, station is Sahebs Indian Restaurant. The restaurant is contemporary in feel. We have just tried it and the food and service were both good when we visited.
For Thai lovers try "The Lemon Grass" 01797 222327 in Rye.
The Pied Bull at Rolvenden is another pub serving good food - worth trying. Fish night Wednesday's.
In Tenterden are also some good restaurants and antique shops. As for restaurants, we have not visited all but the Prezzo Restaurant was good.
The Wild Mushroom Restaurant, on the A28 to Hastings near Westfield, TN35 4SB The Three Oasts on the road to Rye. Alternatively, the Cock in Peasmarsh just outside Jempsons for pub food.
The Curlew is a Michelin star restaurant near Bodium.
